Second Residential CISSL Summer Institute

Preparing teams of teachers, school librarians and administrators

to implement Guided Inquiry in their school districts

This is a rare opportunity for a team from your school to learn how to design and implement Guided Inquiry, a method that transforms the way students engage information to build critical thinking, creativity, and deep understanding for college and career readiness.

Based on the extensive research of CISSL, Guided Inquiry provides a visionary, constructivist approach to addressing Common Core State Standards and developing students as reflective learners in the process of seeking, evaluating and using a variety of sources of information.

Faculty

Dr. Carol Kuhlthau – Developer of Guided Inquiry and the Information Search Process model, and Professor Emerita at Rutgers where she directed the graduate program in school librarianship that is rated #1 in the country by U.S. News & World Report

Dr. Ross Todd – International researcher and keynoter on the impact of school libraries on student learning, Director of CISSL, the Center for International Scholarship in School Libraries, and Associate Professor in the School of Communication and Information at Rutgers

Dr. Leslie Maniotes – National consultant on inquiry learning, Teacher Effectiveness Coach in Denver Public Schools, and co-author of Guided Inquiry: Learning in the 21st Century and Guided Inquiry Design: A Framework for Inquiry in your School

LaDawna Harrington – Award-winning school librarian in top ranked public school district in NJ, and author of Guided Research in Middle School: Mystery in the Media Center

Rutgers University hosts the CISSL Summer Institute entirely on its suburban campus but those traveling from out-of-town who wish to visit New York City or Philadelphia will find easy access via public transportation.

Applications

Public and independent schools are encouraged to participate by sending a team of 2, 3 or 4 members consisting of:

The school librarian and
One or more classroom teachers
An administrator (curriculum coordinator or director of instruction or principal) may join the team on site or virtually

Please complete the application by April 5, 2012. One application per team, please. Space is limited so apply early. Teams that are accepted for the institute will be required to make a financial commitment by May 4, 2012. Scholarships may be available to qualifying teams.

Fees

$500 per person includes:

· All instruction

· 2 nights’ accommodation (June 27 and 28) at conference center in a double room with bath (or increase the fee to $650 per person for a private room)

· All meals, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner, beginning with continental breakfast on June 27 and ending with a full breakfast on June 29

· All snacks and breaks each day

· Wi-Fi access

· Intercampus transportation

· All materials, including Guided Inquiry: Learning in the 21st Century (Libraries Unlimited, 2007) and Guided Inquiry Design: A Framework for Inquiry in Your School (ABC-CLIO, 2012)

Add $100 per person for dinner and accommodations if you plan to arrive on June 26 to be ready for the 9:00 AM start on June 27.

Continuing Education

A Certificate of Completion will be provided to each participant and may be evidence of Continuing Education by the certifying body in your state.

Preparation & Follow-up

Participants are asked to bring the details of a curriculum unit, including Common Core Standards to be addressed, which they will develop as a Guided Inquiry project throughout the Institute. Institute staff will follow up periodically with participating teams.

Research foundation of Guided Inquiry
CISSL research that supports Guided Inquiry
Designing and implementing Guided Inquiry in K-12 schools
Integrating information literacy by learning from a variety of sources of information
Promoting creativity, critical thinking, and preparing students for college and careers through Guided Inquiry
Developing instructional partnerships between teachers, librarians, administrators, parents and the community
Assessing learning through Guided Inquiry

Institute Outcomes

Each participant will come away with:

An understanding of Guided Inquiry: Research foundation and design framework
A knowledge of the CISSL research in Guided Inquiry
Ability to design and implement Guided Inquiry learning
Strategies for information literacy through learning from a variety of sources of information
Ability to assess learning outcomes of Guided Inquiry
Strategies to develop an inquiry community in your school
Capacity to collaborate in instructional teams for guiding inquiry
Prototypes of learning materials and assessment tools for Guided Inquiry
